What is Aircraft Cable?

Aircraft cables are flexible, thin, yet extremely durable, making them among the most useful types of steel cables available in the industrial manufacturing sector. However, you might have heard of the term "aircraft cable" used to describe cables and wires in other sectors and in different applications including but not limited to dog runs and fitness equipment, sailboat rigging and bicycle locks. The term may be used synonymously with such wiring but the true definition actually refers to strong steel wires banded together to form an ultra-tight cable. For more information on an aircraft cable and its applications, read on below.
1. Aircraft Flight Control
True to its name, aircraft cables are heavily relied upon in the aeronautical and aviation industry. Made up of stainless steel, the
flight control cables are typically used for securing and controlling aircraft (for example, during shipping and transport). Their specifications range from .047” to .375” and constructions 7x7 and 7x19. While usually no thicker than ¼ inch in diameter, aircraft cables are usually strong enough to secure an airplane in place.
2. Boat Docks & Maritime Uses Robust and strong aircraft cables are often a requirement when attempting to boat docks or engaging with maritime equipment and machinery. Aircraft cables can be particularly useful when doing maintenance on a fishing boat, attempting to rig in sailboats, or just generally pulling heavy maritime boat machinery.
3. Zip Lines / Recreational Uses While aircraft cables are primarily thought of to be of use solely in industrial manufacturing and aviation, recreational businesses have found them to be extremely useful in acting as the cable for zip-lining. Zip-lining is the activity of people hanging in a mid-air seat and swinging through certain environments including city-side landscapes or simply around different outdoor landscapes.
4. Securing Cargo Aircraft cables are useful for tying down heavy cargo on ships. Stainless
steel cable is recommended for this heavy-duty application because of exposure to the elements and salt water.
5. Garage Doors Because of its robust strength, aircraft cables are often found in garage door mechanisms used for raising or lowering (either galvanized or stainless steel).
6. Exercise Equipment Aircraft cables (either galvanized or stainless) are quite useful in all types of exercise equipment, most commonly with weight machines.
